A Under Used Resource Jeremy Kingsley ITT Tech Composition I K. Henson Smith 5/31/2013 Bike Patrol There is a resource that most police departments overlook when trying to figure out how to stop crime in certain areas. Bike patrols are an underused asset to police because they are silent, able to access areas that a patrol car cannot, and can be used as a tool for good personal relations with the public. Bike patrols can make crime prevention easier for police departments by allowing them to concentrate on certain areas and use less patrol units to cover those areas. Most police departments now do not understand how a bike patrol could help. Bike patrols started in the United States in the late 1800’s. The earliest bike patrol used a bike called a boneshaker made of iron and wood (Petty, 2006). “The earliest use of the bicycle by police may have been in 1869 when an Illinois sheriff reportedly supplied himself and his deputies with these boneshakers.” (Petty, p. 2). It is believed that the United States may have been the first to use bikes but British were using tricycles about the same time (Petty, 2006). A few years later the concept of bicycle police was starting to spread across the United States. “By September 1892, the police in Orange New Jersey were being trained to ride modern safety bicycles for patrol and tandem bicycles for quick response to outbreaks and disturbances.” (Petty, p. 2). This was about the time when the bicycle became what we use.

Writing Your Argument Essay Now that you are familiar with techniques for analyzing an argument, it is time to discuss techniques that will help you write effective critique. Again, you will have 30minutes to complete this portion of the test and, luckily, there are only 5 steps you need to take. As with the Analysis of an Issue section, we will create some formulas to simplify the task. Plugging information into these formulas will help you organize your ideas and prepare you for your critique. Step 1- Understanding the Argument Remember that your goal in the Argument section is to analyze the given argument. You cannot effectively analyze the argument until you completely understand it. To understand the argument, first read it and then answer the following question. Keep in mind that you have a short amount of time, so spend more time mulling over the questions than jotting down notes. If you do write notes, make sure they are just short words and phrases that will help you formulate a plan, not long notations that will take time to write and then review. Identify the conclusion. What premises does the author to support the conclusion? What fallacies or flaws do you recognize in the argument? What assumptions are made in the argument? What does the argument fail to address? “The Pentagon’s New Map” by Thomas P.M. Barnett, a professor of political science at the Naval War College, was published in March, 2003. Barnett divides the world’s countries into three different categories; the functioning core, the non-integrating gap states and seam states. The functioning core includes modernized countries such as the United States, Russia, China, Japan and most European countries. Seam States include Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Morocco, Algeria, Greece, Turkey, Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia; which leaves the Gap to include those “regions plagued by politically repressive regimes, widespread poverty and disease, routine mass murder, and—most important—the chronic conflicts that incubate the next generation of global terrorists” – namely, just about everyone else. My initial problem with the paper begins when the author states that the reason he would support a war with Iraq, a gap state, is that it would result in “long-term military commitment” that would “force America to deal with the entire gap as a strategic threat environment.” Now although I agree that our presence in Iraq after President Bush declared “victory” was a necessary one to ensure the stability of the Iraqi Government, I argue that it wasn’t long term and nor should it have been. Others may argue that we should not have pulled out of Iraq as quickly as we did, but speaking as an American Soldier who was one of the very last in Iraq, it was time.

A Wright to Honor To some people Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. may be known for controversial media clips that aired during the 2008 Obama campaign. However, to those who truly know or have taken the time to study his work, those clips are an unjust representation of the divine man of God that Rev. Jeremiah Wright is. Rev. Wright is pastor emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ located on the Southside of Chicago; widely known for the motto he established during his 36 years of ministry at Trinity, “Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian” (tucc) his leadership helped the congregation grow from 87 to over 8,000. “Dr. Wright’s efforts made Trinity – long considered in theological circles, a model for the black church- one of the most politically active and socially conscious churches in the nation. When he retired the church had over 50 active ministries with social justice advocacy at the core of its theological perspective.” (jeremiahwright) His dedication to the community and passion for social justice makes him more than deserving to have the next charter school on the Southside of Chicago named in his honor. In addition to ministering to a large, close knit congregation and establishing a cultural mission with global results, Reverend Wright’s dedication to helping others extends outside of the church community. His passion for justice and equality has aided in the establishment of two senior housing complexes, Kwame Nkrumah Academy for.
