Language and the computer – isn't that an odd couple? For us humans, language is easily used and at the same time essential. Looking at computers dealing with language, on the other hand, often leaves us with ambivalent feelings. Who hasn't laughed about whimsical results produced by automatic translation websites? At the same time, there are areas in which computers cope with language fairly well, for example in spell checking, Internet search engines or in reading out texts.
Computational linguistics investigates language from a formal point of view. The understanding of language gained by doing so can then be “taught” to a computer. There are many different applications of computational linguistics, ranging from innovative software for language teaching to novel types of search engines. So, language and computers indeed are an odd couple – but computational linguistics helps them come together in the end.…as a Degree Program!
And as if that were not enough, there is an exciting course of study called International Studies in Computational Linguistics (ISCL) which is offered at the University of Tübingen in Germany. Many people with a degree in Computational Linguistics work in research groups in universities, governmental research labs, or in large enterprises. For example in Sweden Computational Linguists work in research groups at the various universities that offer courses in linguistics (like Göteborg or Uppsala), at research labs like SICS (The Swedish Institute of Computer Science), or for companies like Telia or IBM.
In addition there are development groups working on commercial products. These range from software houses like Microsoft, that employs Computational Linguists for their work on Grammar Checkers and Automatic Summarization, to the Munich based SailLabs, that develops a machine translation system, to Caterpillar which employs Computational Linguists for translations of technical manuals.
In recent years the demand for Computational Linguists has risen with the increase of language technology products in the Internet. Job offers come from developers improving Internet search engines with linguistic means, or facilitating the user interface with lingubots. Others are integrating speech recognition with language processing techniques.
In general one can say that currently the job market for Computational Linguists is good.
Getting started: Essentially, you need to know both linguistics and programming. Some universities offer specific programs in Computational Linguistics, while in other cases you may learn linguistics and computer science separately. From what I can tell, an undergrad degree seems to generally be a minimum, a master’s is overall an asset but may not be necessary depending on your other skills, and a PhD is fine but definitely not required. It’s less about the credential than the ability to demonstrate specific skills.
The choice of which programming language to learn depends on what you’re interested in doing: check out projects or job ads that sound interesting to you and what language(s) they use. In general, I think Python and Java are fairly common, but do check this for yourself. Experience and project or several that you can demonstrate are also useful.

Odds of success: All the sources that I’ve found (e.g. ACL, above) say that Computational Linguistics has a reasonably strong job market at the moment and for the future, so I’d expect that if you have the skills then you’re fairly likely to be able to find a job, especially if you’re willing to live in an area that has a lot of tech companies.

The program is designed to introduce students to the foundational and practical information to effectively serve populations who are learning English as a second language. The program consists of two strands, teaching English language learners in U.S. educational settings and teaching English in an international setting. TRANSLATE We test an instructional model (TRANSLATE) designed to improve the English reading comprehension of EL students in grades 2 and 3. In TRANSLATE, students learn to identify key textual excerpts and use cognitive, linguistic and social strategies to facilitate translation and comprehension. We work with four teachers and their EL students (32) in two elementary schools. Our goal is to establish proof of concept for the TRANSLATE approach and to identify any remaining problems teachers encounter during its implementation. [-]

At Ancient Studies you learn to use that which is necessary, be it Ancient History, Archaeology, Ancient Languages or Philosophy. An ideal situation if you consider yourself both an historian and archaeologist, and want to view literature as a product of society.Questions you come across are, for example: Rome was an ethnic melting pot during imperial times. How did classical poets react to this, and can traces of this ethnic intermingling be found in studies of living conditions and artistic expressions? There are a lot of texts about dreams originating from the classical world (from Mesopotamia to Rome and Byzantium). Can we learn more about the people of antiquity by studying these dreams? And what is the influence of Latin literature on Dutch literature? Or: For once don’t compare Homer with Virgil, but with the Gilgamesh epic.Core moduleThe core module of this degree programme is "Great Debates in Ancient Historical Studies".
